Departure to the Pacaya Volcano. After a 45 minute drive via highway and half hour by dirt road arrival at the village of San Francisco los Sales.
From there starts a relatively easy 1.5 to 2 hour climb through amazing formations of lava fields to the rim of the extinct cone. The scenery can change from one day to the other, sometimes it’s an occasional fumarole letting off steam, at other moments a whole lava river flows down the mountain.
When volcanic activities are low you can undertake a more arduous 45 to 60 minute hike through volcanic sand which brings you to the top of the active cone.
“Once you have crested the first rim, it is a moonscape, with the live crater in the background. From the rim of the active crater, it is a scene out of Jules Verne.” (Lissa Hanckel)
Descent is much easier and fun, you actually slide down the volcanic ashes. |
