Guides will describe the technical and sociological aspects of one of the most striking Guatemalan traditions: the handwoven dress worn by the indigenous peoples, the majority of whom descend from the ancient Maya.
Dress reveals not only what village a person is from, but also the activity at hand: everyday, religious, wedding, mourning, celebration. Most famous of the designs that hark back to antiquity are the bat symbol of the Kakchikel from Sololá, and the double headed “eagle,” representing the double-headed serpent of the ancestral Maya pantheon. |
